Paul McCartney - Liverpool Sound Concert
Exactly five years to the day since Paul last rocked Liverpool, the 1st of June 2008 at Anfield Stadium was always going to be a special night. Asked to headline the Liverpool Sound concert as part of the city's celebration for being European Capital Of Culture 2008, before the show Paul said, "When I was asked to do something for Liverpool I accepted immediately. I just love Liverpudlian audiences because they're my people. We've got so much in common. To them, it's one of their lads coming home to play and for me, it feels like I'm playing to my mates. It's like family."
Doors to the concert opened at 4:30pm as the rain fell down. The word Liverpool was spelt out in huge letters above the impressive stage, facing the legendary Kop end of Anfield. Supporting sets from Zutons and the Kaiser Chiefs were fantastic and helped drive the rain away. The anticipation was building for Liverpool's favourite son.
Paul took to the stage shortly after 9pm. The skies cleared and Paul with his band kicked off with a rocking rendition of "Hippy Hippy Shake", from that point the magic was alive and kicking in Liverpool. He was given a hero's welcome before giving a show that took the audience through the most envied back catalogue in music. Paul effortlessly switched between instruments throughout the show, reminding us of his musical prowess. The songs flowed brilliantly and the band, Abe, Rusty, Wix and Brian provided the perfect backdrop for music's most revered icon.
Throughout the lead up to the show it had been hinted that there would be surprises and tributes, and surprises there were. Paul dedicated the Wings hit "My Love" to Linda. He performed 'Something' on the ukulele as a tribute to Geroge Harrison. Dave Grohl was introduced to the stage before performing a rocked up version of 'Band On The Run' (Grohl on guitar), who then jumped on to the drum kit for 'Back In The USSR'. Later in the set the audience were clearly moved by Paul's tribute to John Lennon as he performed 'A Day In The Life' for the first time ever which segued into 'Give Peace A Chance'.
The audience of all ages and backgrounds danced, cried, laughed and sung along with every word. There was something extraordinarily moving about a packed out stadium joining together in a song. It's almost a religious experience. This is what Paul brings when he plays his live shows. As the Times newspaper reported, " There was no denying the communal shudder that took hold during 'A Day In The Life' and, better still, a joyous 'I Saw Her Standing There'.
The crowd were not only entertained by the flawless performances by Paul and the band but also by the big screens, pyrotechnics, high end production, set design and the communal atmosphere created by his music. Dave Grohl came back to join the band for the closing number, a rousing version of 'I Saw Her Standing There'. The show was brought to an end with a spectacular firework display. This was a night that Liverpool, or anyone privileged enough to be present, will never forget.
"If Anfield had a roof, Macca would have blown it right off."
