Paul McCartney - Good Evening New York City

Paul McCartney's Historic Citi Field Opening Show

Features

“It was three great nights for the band and for me personally it was very exciting to be back opening a new stadium on the site of the old Shea Stadium where we had played 44 years previously. Even more exciting because this time round you could hear us!”

Paul McCartney's historic three-night musical christening of New York's Citi Field, witnessed by 120,000-plus attendees and universally hailed as a concert experience for the ages, is immortalized in the Hear Music/Concord Music Group release “Good Evening New York City” out now.

This momentous musical experience is available in two formats: a 3-disc (2 CD + 1 DVD) standard edition and a 4-disc (2 CD + 2 DVD) deluxe version featuring expanded packaging and a bonus DVD including McCartney's traffic-stopping, headline-making July 15 performance on the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee (including bonus numbers not aired on the Late Show with David Letterman broadcast).

    Reviews Update
Monday saw the full release of 'Good Evening New York City' to the UK market and boy it has gone down a storm. The News of the World wrote, 'Never mind a knighthood, we should be erecting a statue for the way Sir Paul continues to dazzle crowds. As with most live albums (there's a free DVD of the show too), this concert recorded in July is no substitute for being there. But it'll make you flog your Beatles albums for a ticket to see the real thing.'

The Guardian review stated 'The man, it must be admitted, has much to be proud of. His back catalogue runs like a golden thread in the tapestry of lives of a certain vintage." The Mail wrote, 'This one is a two-hour spectacular'.

    Good Evening Europe Begins

Wow, what a few days it has been! Paul sure knows how to make the most of his time! On Wednesday Paul kicked off his 'Good Evening Europe' tour in serious style at the Color Line Arena, Hamburg. Paul played an electrifying set in front of an emotionally charged sell-out crowd.

AFP reported; "The sold-out, nearly three-hour show, took in Fab Four favourites, hits from his later band Wings, solo efforts and a few new numbers and drew a warm, enthusiastic welcome from an audience spanning three generations. Showing off a renowned knack for thrilling a crowd and remarkable endurance -- he took no breaks during the marathon set, not even for a sip of water."

Those lucky enough to be at the show were also treated to some surprise world premiere exclusives, in the form of 'And I Love Her', 'Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da' and Paul’s brand new track ‘(I Want To) Come Home’, which is taken from the new Robert De Niro film 'Everybody’s Fine'.

News agency Bloomberg wrote, "McCartney whisked the audience from the quiet melancholy of ‘Yesterday’, played alone with an acoustic guitar, to the madness of ‘Helter Skelter’ -- complete with vibrating bass, thrashing percussion and vertigo-inducing roller-coaster rides beamed onto a screen behind him."

As if the excitement of Wednesday night was not enough, as the last note of 'The End' rang out, the crew were already dismantling everything and preparing to hit the road to Berlin. However, for Paul he had to make a rather important detour before meeting up with the rest of the crew in the German capital.

Thursday morning saw Paul address the European Parliament in Brussels on his 'Meat Free Monday' initiative. Paul delivered a heartfelt speech at a European Parliament conference and called for a global effort to change eating habits and help save the planet from global warming. Paul also read out a statement in support of his campaign from US climate change activist Al Gore that said, "Meatless Mondays is a responsible and welcome component to a strategy for reducing global pollution." Paul’s speech was greeted with applause and in places he even managed to make some of the more serious members of the audience smile.

Following Paul's address there was no time to stick around, or take up (the literally hundreds of) lunch offers! It was time to meet up with the crew and band and rock Berlin! Paul played his second sold out show in 48 hours at the O2 World Berlin last night. Another hit filled set went down an absolute storm and saw him appear on the front cover of Berlin’s biggest daily paper the Berliner Morgenpost with a glowing review.

On his 48 hour whirlwind trip Paul also found the time to take some German refresher lessons, which meant he was able to address the audiences in their native tongue. This went down a treat and the crowd showed their appreciation right back at Paul. He also dedicated songs in German to John, George and Linda.

German national newspaper Die Welt reported; “Sometimes the touring artists get it wrong and twist the names of the cities. The venues look alike, the people and the cities too, but Paul McCartney makes no mistakes”. Talking about the show itself they said, “We see a different Paul to his last tour. On one hand he is playing with more fun, and on the other he works with more dedication. This is so much more than an evening with a living legend music box. When Paul sings ‘Here Today’ alone with his guitar, it’s not only him who has to hold back the tears.”

The tour continues, next stop Arnhem Gelredome!

For Whom The Bell Tells...Issue 4

    Europe Here We Come…
It’s now hours until the new tour gets up and running. The press office has relocated to Germany and we are all set for the tour. We have been running around madly, ironing out last minute issues with local media and ensuring that everything is set for opening night. For the last week we have been knee deep in logistical work; sorting out reviewers, photographers, TV crews, last minute requests and so on. The fun part is just about to start - getting out on the road with Paul, the band, the touring team (a second family to us all) and seeing the shows, but for now we are concentrating on the other side of things, which is the paperwork. So it was a welcome diversion last week to be able to get out of the office as Paul was on the promotional trail for 'Good Evening New York City', which is already out in the US, and gets a UK release on the 14th December.

And it's all off to a great start too. BBC Online reported; “In July 2009, Britain's greatest living musician (heck, person) entertained 120,000 New Yorkers with a career-straddling set of Beatles classics, Wings favourites and solo tracks. It's always a joy to hear a real Beatle singing real Beatles songs, and during I'm Down some video trickery even allows Macca to duet with John and George, as they play the same song at the 1965 Shea show. These songs are both for everyone and timeless – just look at the diversity of attendees captured enthralled on the DVD. Good Evening… is a wonderful souvenir for those who were there or who've seen his tour over the last few months, and a perfectly pleasant second-hand experience for those who weren't."

On Wednesday (25th November) Paul recorded an MTV ‘Zane Lowe Meets’ TV special, which is due to air on MTV1, MTV2 and VH1 throughout December (check website for exact dates coming soon). As usual, Zane gave a great interview and he and Paul discussed Paul’s hectic year and talked about his Citi Field show in July and the imminent tour. After finishing at MTV Paul was off to attend a screening event for the launch of the DVD, which was being held for international media (you will have read about this in the news section). The screening event was right across the other side of town and as we drove across to the event Paul was playing some new tunes in his car. For several tracks I ashamedly had to use Shazam to work out what we were listening to! The tunes included recent tracks by Empire Of The Sun and Metronomy, amongst others.

The screening event was hosted by Dermot O’Leary (who had interviewed Paul for Radio 2 a few weeks back) and was held in a cool screening bar in Borough. The audience was treated to a specially created edit of ‘Good Evening New York City’ and then a surprise audience with Paul. After the event Paul was mobbed by members of her majesty’s press and happily posed for pictures. Special mention must go to the girls from The Mirror; last year when Paul was promoting The Fireman album the Mirror girls came to the launch event appropriately dressed with yellow hats. This time round the girls switched emergency service departments to the NYPD, in honour of the fact that Paul is actually an honourary member of the NYPD (true fact!) and as he correctly pointed out to the girls, he could have had them arrested for impersonating officers of the law! It leaves the press office thinking about what other themes they might come up with next year!

The following day (Thursday 26th) Paul did interviews for Lauren Laverne’s new BBC 6 Music Show, Absolute Radio’s breakfast show and for Capital Radio (check website for details). Much to the interviewees delight these interviews took place in Paul’s office, which Lauren aptly named the ‘Bat Cave’, which the office shall now always be called internally!

Returning to the press office after a hard day’s work at the Bat Cave I was delighted to receive the new issue of Q Magazine. The issue is called ‘The Artists Of The Century’ and features a Vanity Fair-style multi-artist lineup cover (including our very own Batman). If you haven’t seen it, you must check it out. The press team has recently relocated to a new office and this is one we will be hanging on the wall, for sure! When Paul did the photo shoot for the magazine a month or so go he was fooling around on the Höfner. The photographer asked if it was heavy and, without hesitation, Paul removed the iconic bass and passed it to the photographer. He said, ‘Here you go, have a try’. The photographer later told us just how nervous he felt at that point as it must be impossible to put a price on that guitar, but that he’d dine out on that one! Paul’s assistant, John, told us how Paul used to actually throw him the guitar during live shows and it would nearly give him a heart attack each time!

So back to the present… Hamburg is buzzing. Leaving the hotel this morning I noticed a small group of paps congregating nearby. Word is spreading fast. As I walked out to the local coffee shop the streets were awash with McCartney posters and the radio stations playing in the shops were playing back-to-back McCartney related songs. It’s amazing to think it was 49 years ago that Paul first came here with The Beatles, but it’s a fact that the city are clearly, to this day, very proud of.

Down at the venue and the mood backstage is high. Members of the crew greet each other in the way that family and friends do. There is such a strong bond between everyone who works behind the scenes on Paul’s tours. These guys have been working with Paul for years now and the friendship and bond between Paul and the team is mutual. There is lots of chat about what’s going to be on the set-list tonight? What can people expect from this show? Well, all these questions will be answered in a matter of hours. Standby Hamburg, prepare to be rocked!

We’ll be bringing you all the backstage news and gossip from the opening shows in the next installment.

    Macca Mania Returns To Hamburg

49 years after playing his part in putting Hamburg on the map as a musical Mecca for millions of music pilgrims over the years, Paul McCartney returns to the famous city to start his first European tour in five years. The “Good Evening Europe” tour will see Paul play eight special arena shows across Europe, before culminating with his first ever show at London’s O2 Arena, which sold out in an incredible four seconds!

Paul’s opening night at the Color Line Arena will be his first visit to Hamburg since his 2003 “Back In The World” tour and, with the city holding a very special place in Paul’s heart, it promises to be an unforgettable night. The media in Hamburg have been writing non-stop about what they are calling a ‘special home coming show’.

Talking about opening the new tour in Hamburg, Paul said; “Starting the tour here was actually suggested to me by my promoter. I like the idea very much of opening in Hamburg as it echoes the opening of my career with The Beatles. I like the idea of going back to a city that I have such fond memories of. This is my chance to bring our current show home to where it all began.” He continued; “It’s a completely different world now. Back then we were young boys let off the leash from Liverpool who got this amazing foreign gig. We had only really played a few shows in Liverpool when we first went out. The manager of the club we were playing in told us, “You must make a show (or mak shau!)” So that was the only instruction we had and that’s sort of what happened - it was our training ground. So we would be in this virtually empty club and you would see a few students come in and the first thing they would look at would be the beer price and it was high! So we had to work hard to attract them in.”

In contrast, this time round Paul will be rocking out in front of a sold out arena audience. Over the last few weeks Paul has been putting the finishing touches to the show along with Abe, Rusty, Wix and Brian; his band of nearly ten years. The band has added a few new numbers to the set since their sellout summer tour of the US. This show promises the usual excitement, drama and high-emotions that audiences of millions all over the world have been treated to over the years.

For those of you who won’t be able to make it to one of the European shows this December, you can re-live the Macca magic with ‘Good Evening New York City’, a multi-disc CD/DVD featuring performances recorded at New York’s Citi Field from Paul’s ‘Summer Live ‘09’ tour, released in the UK on December 14th.

Following a massive tour of the US this summer, Paul McCartney plays his first European Tour since 2004. This December sees Macca play seven special arena shows across Europe, culminating with his first ever public performance at London's O2 Arena, which is his only UK date of this year.

“This is my chance to bring our current show home to where it all began. Starting in Hamburg, ending in London and rocking everywhere in between. I'm looking forward to ending the year on a high.”
