Meat Free Monday Celebrates its 6th Birthday

Meat Free Monday - the McCartney family's campaign to reduce meat for both health and envinronmental reasons - turns six years old today!

Since its London launch by Paul, Mary and Stella McCartney in 2009, Meat Free Monday has been collecting numerous supporters each year including Al Gore, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jamie Oliver and tens of thousands of others around the globe.

Over the past six years meat-reducing has become a hot topic, as the whole planet faces up to the problems posed by unsustainable efforts to feed an insatiable appetite for meat.

Not only are the millions of animals raised for human consumption costing our climate dear, but rates of obesity are spiralling, particularly among children and young people.

Awareness of the issues is increasing too, however, and thousands more of you every day are rising to the challenge of eating for a better tomorrow, whether you’re looking after the environment or your health.

A highlight last year was an online campaign – the Meat Free Monday Climate Pledge – in the build up to the UN Climate Summit in New York last September. The McCartney family teamed up with the government’s climate tsar, Greg Barker MP, to encourage people to do their bit to combat climate change by saying “no” to meat at the start of the week.
