You Gave Me The Answer: Do you think home is something you carry or leave behind?

Paul and Ringo’s song ‘Home to Us’ - from his recent number one album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane - has always felt like a love letter to Liverpool. With its new Flip Mix now out in the world on the recently released Special Edition, the song has found a renewed resonance with fans, particularly those in the city whose streets, stories and people continue to inspire so much of Paul's music.

Liverpool itself is entering an exciting new chapter. This week, Apple Corps announced plans for a spectacular new city-centre home for The Beatles Story, which will move in 2028 to a new 100,000 square foot site opposite Liverpool Lime Street station. With Liverpool very much on our minds, we sat down with Paul to discuss Carol’s question if the word ‘home’ means to him, and whether it is something we leave behind or carry with us wherever life takes us.

Carol asks: Do you think home is something you carry or leave behind? Have you ever found home again in a place that wasn't Liverpool?

Paul: Yeah, I think there are various types of home. I would have said when I was growing up that home was just with my family - my immediate family - and the house we lived in. That was eventually in Forthlin Road, but we lived in quite a few places before then. So, they were all home because the family lived there.

And then when I moved down to London, I got a house here and that is now home. It's been home for a long time. And then I spent a lot of time in America. So that house that I have there becomes home too.

So, it's really, like that old song: 'Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home'.

PaulMcCartney.com: A great song!

Paul: So, it's a bit of that. You know, as long as the family's there and love is there.

PaulMcCartney.com: That's it. It's about the people. Is that what makes home then, the family being there, and feeling love in the house?

Paul: Yeah, I think that's really what it is. Family makes a home. Wherever you are.

Simple words, perhaps, but they capture three ideas that have appeared again and again throughout Paul's music, his storytelling and his outlook on life: home, family and love.

From discussing his first solo album, McCartney, Paul once described those very themes as being at the heart of the record. More than five decades later, they continue to resonate throughout his work. Whether reflecting on Liverpool, writing about the people closest to him, or sharing memories from different chapters of his life, those same threads remain woven through the stories he tells. Paul's answer reminds us that a sense of belonging isn't defined by bricks and mortar. Instead, it's found in the people around us, the families we build and the love we share. From McCartney to The Boys of Dungeon Lane, those enduring themes of home, family and love continue to shape both Paul's music and his life.
