Music discovery has always been something we enjoy sharing with those closest to us. From mixtapes made on CDs and cassettes to collaborative playlists with friends for a summer holiday together, whether that’s revisiting old favourites and finding new songs.
We recently spoke to Paul about making playlists, sharing music with family, and the eclectic tracklists that come together when different generations share the “aux cord”.
PaulMcCartney.com asks: Do you ever make playlists, and do you share them with family and friends?
Paul: I do sometimes, yeah. If we’re having a party and I want a dance list, I’ll make one. I’ve also done it with my grandson, Arthur, which has been really nice. We sort of cobbled one together; a mix of old rock ’n’ roll favourites and some newer tracks. It turned out pretty good.
PaulMcCartney.com: Do you think you and Arthur have similar taste, or is it more about discovering new music together?
Paul: It’s a bit of both. I’ll show him things I think will work, and then he adds to it, we’ve got a collaborative playlist. A friend of his who’s a painter even knocked up a little cover for it.
PaulMcCartney.com: We need to know what’s on the playlist?
Paul: Because we were big friends with Jimmy (Buffett), ‘Margaritaville’ starts it all off, followed by ‘All of the Lights’ and then we go into like Daft Punk, and Tame Impala, which Arthur likes.
PaulMcCartney.com: You two should start DJ-ing weddings!
Paul: We definitely could! And then I'll throw in ‘Waterloo Sunset’ and ‘Sunny Goodge Street’. Do you know ‘Sunny Goodge Street’? It's great. It's a Donovan song from the 60s. It's very nice. And then you know, ‘Kiss of Venus’, Dominic Fike’s version.
PaulMcCartney.com: We love that song. It’s on a few of our playlists and we’ve heard it played in coffee shops a few times.
Paul: It's a good little track. Yeah, Dominic really reimagined it. It was great.
So, there you have it, Paul and his grandson Arthur have a secret collaborative playlist that you might hear first at a wedding? What a DJ duo they could be with their multi-generational, cross genre blending mix of tunes. We wonder what their DJ name would be?
As we count down to Paul’s new album arriving next month, we’re already curating another themed playlist inspired by the album; and this time, we’re heading to L24.
For our next ‘Sticking Out of My Back Pocket’ playlist, we’re asking fans to share their favourite Paul solo, Wings and Beatles tracks that celebrate Liverpool. Submit your songs!
